Welcome to MassOpenBooks, your online tool to find out how Massachusetts State government is spending your tax dollars!
The site is sponsored by the Center for Better Government at Pioneer Institute, a public policy research think tank.
MassOpenBooks is much more than a simple online spreadsheet. It's a point of reference and discussion for policy wonks, scholars with too much time on their hands, and citizens across the state to find out what state employees’ make, who is getting what kind of pension and payments made by government agencies to businesses and people. Also, you will be able to obtain data from specific people or departments, or make comparisons and we offer you a section with our suggested data analysis.
MassOpenBooks gives you easy access to public, objective information that goes beyond hidden agendas and political parties. It’s public information, so use it! We present the data—you dig as far as you want to go. And you draw your own conclusions.
By making key information accessible, we aim to promote data-driven policies and accountability in government—a government that works for us all.
Please take the time to review our User Agreement before viewing the site.
As time goes by, we will update this website with new data and new features. Make sure you sign up to our free mailing list on the top of this page, so we can keep you up to date!
Finally, the data used in this website are public records obtained from the State Comptroller’s Office and the State Retirement Board. It was at one point entered into the system manually, so we cannot guarantee 100% data accuracy or completeness. If you notice an error, please contact Pioneer Institute immediately by emailing us at info@massopenbooks.org.
Thank you for visiting MassOpenBooks!
